THE IDEA IN ONE MINUTE

One base rank.
Four complete journeys.

Each foundation starts at the opening card’s rank and builds up in suit, wrapping from king to ace. Empty tableau columns draw from the reserve before other sources can fill them.

See reserve priority ↓
  1. 01

    Set aside the reserve

Thirteen cards, only the top exposed. Deal one foundation base and four tableau cards.

  2. 02

    Build four columns

Alternate colours one rank down, with king on ace allowed. Move singles or whole ordered columns.

  3. 03

    Cycle the stock

Draw three to waste. Only the top plays. Recycle without shuffling as often as needed.

CANFIELD SOLITAIRE RULES, MADE VISIBLE

Drain the reserve.
Build around the base.

This is draw-three Canfield, also known as Demon Patience, with unlimited stock recycling, exposed singles or whole-column moves, and foundation returns. These conventions are stated so other variants do not get mixed in.

01
ONE PACK, FOUR AREAS

Start with thirteen in reserve.

Shuffle 52 cards without jokers. Put thirteen in a reserve pile, exposing only its top card. Deal the next card to the first foundation: its rank becomes the base for all four foundations.

Deal one face-up card to each of four tableau columns. The remaining thirty-four cards form a stock, with a waste space beside it. The foundation base rank remains fixed throughout that deal, even if you later bring its first card back to the tableau.

02
DOWN IN ALTERNATING COLOURS

Move a single or a whole column.

Build down one rank in alternating colours. A red eight fits a black nine. At the corner, a king may fit an opposite-colour ace. An exposed single end card may move; alternatively move an entire correctly built column by selecting its first card.

A partial group from the middle of a column is not allowed at this table. Reserve and waste top cards may join legal tableau ends. Only exposed cards are selectable; covered reserve and waste cards are unavailable.

03
RESERVE BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE

A gap refills automatically.

When a move leaves a column empty and reserve cards remain, the exposed reserve card fills that gap immediately. The next reserve card then turns face up. The reserve top may also play directly to a legal foundation or occupied tableau column.

Once the reserve is exhausted, any exposed single or a complete ordered tableau column can fill an empty column. There is no king-only restriction in that situation.

04
THREE AT A TIME

Recycle without shuffling.

Draw up to three stock cards onto the waste, or fewer if fewer remain. Only the waste top can play. Moving it exposes the card below. The other cards in a drawn packet are not independently selectable while covered.

After the stock is empty, Recycle stock turns the waste back in its existing order, without shuffling. That action prepares the stock; click Draw three cards again to deal. Recycling is unlimited. Removing cards can change which cards are exposed on the next pass.

05
UP IN SUIT FROM THE BASE

Wrap and complete all thirteen.

Every empty foundation starts at the same base rank. If the first card was a queen, each suit builds queen, king, ace, two and on through jack. Build one rank up in the same suit, wrapping king to ace. Each completed foundation contains thirteen cards.

Exposed foundation cards can return to legal tableau destinations at this table. Win when all 52 cards are on the four foundations. There is no time limit or stored score; random deals are not checked for solvability.

GOOD QUESTIONS

A familiar game.
A clear answer.

What is Canfield’s foundation base?+

The rank of the single opening foundation card. Each other foundation starts on that same rank, then builds upwards in its own suit.

Can a king go on an ace?+

Yes on an opposite-colour tableau ace. Foundations wrap in the other direction: king is followed by ace of the same suit.

How many reserve cards are dealt?+

Thirteen, with only the top face up. Playing it reveals the next card.

What happens when a column becomes empty?+

The reserve top fills it automatically while reserve cards remain. After that pile is exhausted, an exposed single or a whole ordered column can fill a gap.

Can I move part of a sequence?+

Not a multi-card partial sequence at this table. Move an exposed end card or select the first card to move the whole ordered column.

How does the draw-three stock work?+

Up to three cards turn onto waste. Only the exposed top plays. When stock is exhausted, recycle without shuffling, then draw again.

Can I take cards back from foundations?+

Yes. With no other card selected, select a foundation and choose a legal tableau column. The deal’s base rank remains unchanged.

Is Canfield guaranteed to be solvable?+

No. These are random deals, and hints identify legal options rather than a complete route to victory.
